Why the work in Wooloowin looks the way it does
Wooloowin is almost entirely pre-war: timber and tin on stumps, narrow side setbacks, and a large share of it raised and built in underneath at some point in the last thirty years. That history shows up in two jobs we do here more than anywhere else. The first is switchboards still running ceramic rewireable fuses with no safety switch on the power circuits. The second is a downstairs conversion where the new living area was hung off the original lighting circuit instead of getting a subboard of its own.
The other half of the work is smoke alarm compliance. A good portion of Wooloowin’s character housing changes hands or gets re-leased every few years, and interconnected photoelectric alarms are already required whenever a home is sold or leased in Queensland, with every other domestic dwelling to follow by 1 January 2027. Do I need a whole new switchboard just to get a safety switch?
Not always. If the existing board has spare width and the wiring behind it is sound, RCBOs can go straight in. The older ceramic fuse boards common in Wooloowin usually don’t have the room, and that is when a new board is the sensible call. We tell you which one it is before we start, not halfway through.
We’re raising the house. When should the electrician come in?
Twice. Once before the frame gets closed up so the cable runs go inside the walls, and again at fit-off for the points, switches and subboard. Booking the first visit late is the single most common reason a downstairs conversion ends up with surface conduit running across the ceiling.
