What QLD smoke alarm law actually requires
From 1 January 2027, every Queensland home must meet the updated smoke alarm rules. Here’s what compliance actually looks like.
Photoelectric only
All alarms must be photoelectric and meet AS 3786:2014.
Interconnected
When one sounds, they all sound, hardwired or wireless.
Every room that counts
Every bedroom, every storey, and connecting hallways.
The 10 year rule
Alarms over 10 years old, or that fail testing, must be replaced.
You’re letting a real electrician into your home. That should mean something.
EWJ Electrical is owned and run by Ethan Wilcox and Jimmy Evans, two ex Australian Army tradespeople who built EWJ on the same standard the Army held them to. Show up, do it properly, don’t cut corners. No call centres, no overheads passed on to you, no surprises.
We turn up on time. We give you a fixed price before we start. We leave your home cleaner than we found it. And we do compliance to the actual standard, not a shortcut version of it.
Same standard applies to everything else we do. If you are booking alarms and thinking about a charger for the car, our EV charger installation work is quoted and installed the same way, and we can look at both on the one visit.
Why getting compliant matters before the deadline
Non-compliant alarms can affect fire insurance claims and delay your Form 24 at property settlement. As 1 January 2027 gets closer, demand for compliance work rises, and so does how long you’ll wait for a booking.
For more on the requirements, see the Queensland Fire Department’s smoke alarm guidance.

Frequently asked questions
Quick answers to what most Brisbane homeowners ask before booking.
Are you a real licensed electrician?
Yes. Ethan Wilcox holds Queensland Electrical Contractor Licence 1512150, and Jimmy Evans holds Licence 1510523. EWJ Electrical is veteran owned and fully insured, and handles compliance, switchboards, EV chargers and general repairs.
Can you come out for an emergency tonight?
Yes. EWJ Electrical is available 24 hours, 7 days a week for anything genuinely unsafe, call us directly. Smoke alarm compliance work itself is usually booked in as a planned appointment rather than an emergency callout.
How much does smoke alarm compliance cost in Brisbane?
It depends on the size of your home and how many alarms are needed. We give every customer a fixed upfront price before we start. No hourly rates, no surprises.
