Apartments change the job before we start
Newstead is apartments, and that changes the job before anyone picks up a tool. Most of what we get called for here is one of two things. An EV charger installation in a basement car space, which needs the body corporate’s approval and, almost always, a supply arrangement that bills the electricity back to your lot rather than to common property. Or smoke alarms in a unit that is about to be leased.
The rest is the older half of the suburb: the warehouse conversions and small commercial tenancies along Breakfast Creek Road and Commercial Road, where the switchboard is usually shared, the original supply was sized for a very different use, and the answer depends on what the building’s main board can actually carry. We check that first rather than quoting on assumption. Newstead is one of the suburbs we cover, run out of our base in neighbouring Albion.

Can I install an EV charger in my apartment car space?
Usually yes. Two things have to line up: the body corporate has to approve the installation, and the supply has to be arranged so the electricity is billed to your lot instead of common property. We do the site check, confirm what the building’s board can carry, and give you the documentation the committee will ask for before you go to them.
Do you work with body corporates and building managers?
Yes. We’re happy to deal with the committee or the building manager directly, and to quote common property work separately from lot work so the paperwork is clean on both sides.
Are smoke alarms in a unit different to a house?
The rule is the same: photoelectric, interconnected, in the right rooms. The install is not. In a unit there is no roof space to run through, so the alarms are interconnected wirelessly or through the ceiling cavity. It takes longer and it needs planning around the slab.
